ARNOLD ARBORETUM, HARVARD UNIVERSITY,
Jamaica Plain, Mass, July 13, 1898.
My dear Muir:
I have today received the enclosed note from Canby who says that he has already written you about our journey. The scheme seems to be to leave here or New York about the 15th of September for the south, but that does not mean that you must put off coming here until that date, for the sooner you come the better I shall be pleased as we can have some good times in New England together before starting for the south, although at the end of August there is to be a terrible crowd of pseudo-scientists, foresters, botanists, and alii kinds of people here, a big convention and blow-out--a thing to be avoided by you and I and all other respectable and self-respecting men. I may have to be here for a day or two at that time as some of them may want to see the Arboretum, but if you want to avoid the crowd I can stowe you away with the family very safely and remotely in our house at Woods Hole which is on the extreme tip of the heel of Cape Cod. a spot where you will find a good many things to interest you.
Faithfully yours,
[illegible]
