My dear Muir:
Do you know anything about the Abies which is said to form a great forest to the west of the Sierra Nevada in the neighborhood, I should think, of Susanville, Marcus E. Jones told me of it last year but was very vague as to the species. He said, however, it was Abies magnifica, although I should expect Abies concolor in that dry region and at a low altitude. J. Burtt Davy, botanist of the University of California, has written me of the same thing and calls the tree Red Fir and says that it occurs from four to six thousand feet. If you have ever been through that region, possibly you can throw some light on the subject.
Very faithfully yours,
[illegible]
John Muir, Esq.
