[Original letter returned to Miss Katherine Merrill Graydon].Martinez, March 27, '07.My dear Miss Graydon:Most all the spare dollars in the world seem to be rolling toward education these days, but great teachers are hard to find and can't be had for money. Anyhow, whether or not Catherine Morrill's name is given to a chair of Literature, she will live in the hearts of her friends and her work will go on and be felt for [a] good long [time] after her name is forgotten by the restless stormy world. I'm sorry to hear your mother is not well. Remember me to her when next you write, and to Mrs. Moores and Mina and all the young folks. We all are about as usual here. Helen has got through the winter very well, much to my relief. Wanda is living in the adobe by the front gate. She is not far from us, yet we see but little of her now, as if she were the width of a sea away.Heaven's good luck be yours,John MuirHave done but little more this winter and fall than take care of Helen and repair earthquake shattered house. The one across the valley my sister used to live in is still in ruins.[Envelope addressed Miss Katherine M. Graydon, Oahu College, Honolulu, Hawaii],03857
