[Original letter returned to Miss Katharine M. Graydon]Martinez, July 8, '07.Dear Miss Graydon:Wanda has a son, Strentzel Hanna, now two weeks old, and of course the most wonderful citizen of the state - so good-natured, solemn, and wise he has been compared with Buddha. This belief has of course added fine majesty to Wanda. We are all about as usual - the Swetts, Colemans, Reids, and our own family. David, Muir and wife, and Sister.Sarah are in Pacific Grove. Maggie is better in health than for a long time past. Helen and I have the big house to ourselves, making it difficult to leave home. Helen is growing stronger and is almost completely restored in health. So at last these long weary years of anxiety are over, and I'm trying to take up again the lines of work dropped on my return from Australia.Your life in that charming island climate must be delightful, though clouded at times with lonesomeness. If you could only have your mother with you! How are the plans for a grand gathering of the Graydon clan prospering? I haven't heard a word from Indiana for a long time -not, I think, since the beginning of our dark days. Sorrow and trouble of their own, I suppose. Remember me to them all when you write, and write to Wanda; she will be delighted, and believe us all,Faithfully yours, John Muir[Envelope addressed Miss Katharine M.
