63Martinez, Aug. 3, 1898My dear Johnson.I have just read your Editorials on the war, civil service, etc. They are capital. We miss the few soldiers that have been so admirably [poling?] the National Parks. Sheep & fire destruction are going merrily on. Some 85000 sheep it is said were in the Yosemite Park alone & were drawn out by special agents & guards. Of course they cannot keep them out. How Pinchot can be opposed to soldiers & in favor of civilians & to some extent of sheep in the view of results passes my understanding.I expect to start east about the end of this month to see the trees of the Alleghenies & hope to see you ere I return.Ever Yours with thanks for editoralsJ Muir
