thanks me for many photos of my taking as to his trip to New England & the southern states Sierra Club nearly deadHappy New YearMartinez, Dec 28. 1898My dear Mr Luken - I thank you heartily for the magnificent lot of forest photographs just arrived. Few could guess that so many grand pictures of forest, garden & mountain could be found in San Bernardino Range.I got home about a month ago. Spent the summer in New England, Canada & the southern states studying the forests, & of course I had a grand time especially in the Alleghanies. The forests there of oak, maple, hickory, Linden, Magnolia, Liriodendron, Oxydendron Tupelo nyssa etc are perfectly glorious. I'm trying to write about them Our Sierra club seems half dead & I dont know but you south Cal people will have to start another alpine forest club. With many thanks wishing you all a Happy New YearI am ever YoursJohn MuirLove to Lottie
