enemies of forestry are trying to abolish the San Jacinto & Cleveland reserve we all opposed such actions & won outMartinez, Apr 25. 1898My dear Lukens,Not having heard from you lately I take your silence for good news that Lottie is well.Do you know what is going on in Washington in forestry affairs? The Senate has already passed an amendment to the Sundry Civil Bill abolishing altogether the grand Cleveland Forest Reservations. The matter is now in the House for action but has not yet (Apr 16) been reported on by the Committee to which it has been referred. Do what you can with your S. California people to save them. Write & get as many others as possible to write & protest to Senators & Representatives. The devil is in these Northern Senators. I wish the trees themselves could march to Congress. With love to Lottie & kind remembrances to you wife & the [Janes?] I am ever yoursJohn Muir
