Brandon Stansell. With Jimmie Allen’s recent #1 song, Kane Brown’s #1 album and Grammy wins for artists like Kacey Musgraves and Brandi Carlile, Country music seems to be swinging open its doors to some of the more unlikely of country artists - enter Brandon Stansell. When CMT premiered the video for Brandon’s single HOMETOWN in November 2018, he instantly became what they called,“living history.” The premiere of this video, addressing LGBTQ themes, is a first for the home of Country Music videos. The video then went on to be named one of Rolling Stone’s Top 10 Country Music Videos of 2018. "Country music may not be known for being inclusive to LGBTQ artists, but rising musician Brandon Stansell is redefining the genre one soulful song at a time," says Billboard. His is a bold new voice in the genre, as comfortable making you tap your foot as shed a tear - a singer songwriter with something to say, and a voice to remember.
Tama Brisbane is the City of Stockton’s Inaugural Poet Laureate. In her two terms of service, she has presented over 75 times, including the inauguration of Michael Tubbs, the city’s first Black Mayor. Her first project in 2015 was to help craft Stockton’s successful return to All-American City status with a groundbreaking, 10-minute spoken word presentation at the National Finals in Denver. At her historic 2017 appearance as Guest Poet at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Martin Luther King III told her, “Your words matter.” She is Co-Founder and Executive Director of the nationally-recognized literary and performing arts nonprofit organization With Our Words; a 12-time youth poetry slam coach; and a County Coordinator for California Poets in the Schools, one of the largest writing residency programs in the nation. “Mama T” is also: a Susan B. Anthony Award Winner for Creative Arts, a University of the Pacific Woman of Distinction. a Black Women Organized for Political Action Honoree, a Stockton Arts Commission Comet Award Winner, a California Vision 2020 Ambassador, and a charter member of the Brave New Voices National Network. Her tireless work on behalf of Stockton/Central Valley voices, particularly young voices of color, has been recognized by both houses of the California Legislature as well as both houses of the United States Congress. How does she do it? By standing in constant thanks to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for the blessing of her particular earthly mission, and by taking inspiration and comfort from her two favorite quotes. One is from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. – “the salvation of humanity lies in the hands of the creatively maladjusted.” The other is attributed to an Eastern proverb – “if you sit on the bank of the river long enough, you will see the body of your enemy float by.”
