Abstract
Writing rubrics often foster a mindset based on correction and fault-finding. This deficit approach may discourage students who have already had negative experiences with writing. We need to transform writing assessment to better align with the deep learning outcomes we value and with student engagement, persistence, and success. Together, we will build a better rubric.
