Abstract
Improve Your Tomorrow is an organization dedicated to preparing young men of color to attend and graduate from colleges and universities through one-on-one mentorship and after-school workshops. While the program primarily emphasizes students’ internal growth, this project focused on developing external skills to help students become more well-rounded individuals and confidently share ideas with their peers.
Observations of students’ high energy levels indicated a need for improved hygiene and overall wellness habits. In response, three interactive workshops were designed for sixth- through eighth-grade students participating in Improve Your Tomorrow’s after-school program at Wilson Elementary School. These workshops focused on promoting overall health by addressing hygiene, nutrition, and physical activity.
Each workshop included engaging activities to create a fun and supportive learning environment. Student learning and program effectiveness were measured using pre- and post-workshop surveys. Results showed higher scores on post-workshop surveys, indicating increased understanding of healthy habits. The success of these workshops suggests that the lessons may be beneficial for future Improve Your Tomorrow programs.
