Analysis of Racial Bias in Recidivism
Poster Number
5C
Introduction/Abstract
Recidivism which is the act of a person repeating an undesirable activity after experiencing negative repercussions of that conduct. There is a lot of research conducted on this topic as the US is known to have one of the highest incarceration rates in the world and a portion of that statistic is due to recidivism.
Purpose
In this study, I will gain a better understanding and explore ways to reduce this number. An aspect to target is the racial bias present. Gaining a better understanding of this bias can help contribute towards productive solution in reducing the amount of repeat offenders.
Method
Data analysis will be conducted to gain a better understanding of the bias in the dataset from Kaggle which draws data from COMPAS.
Results
After conducting this research, my results will help me understand which races are experiencing this bias and what may be causing that. In doing so, I will be able to find an effective solution that is backed by data that can help reduce this bias.
Significance
Understanding what is causing high rates of recidivism can help implement changes within the prison system. Making them more focused towards rehabilitation versus just keeping them off the streets can help reduce these rates as well as make society a better place.
