Abstract

Co-creation, between faculty and students in pharmacy education involves collaborative involvement from both parties, aimed at enhancing learning, skill development, and knowledge application. Despite the uncertainties inherent in this innovative approach, its foundation lies in the principles of shared responsibility and decision making, empowering students to take ownership of their learning and develop into active, critical thinkers. This co-creation project was driven by a collective aspiration to cultivate interest among students in the field of emergency medicine pharmacy, particularly those with limited insight into various pharmacy fields. This process played a fundamental role in shaping and enriching the outcome of this co-curricular event.

Purpose

The purpose of this project was to create an immersive co-curricular event reflecting the day-to-day experience of an emergency medicine (EM) pharmacist for pharmacy students. The co-creation process was developed using the principles of the ADDIE model, an instructional design framework which incorporates principles of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation.

Results

Results in progress; pending exemption from the Institutional Review Board.

Significance

This co-creation project provided a novel event planning framework, fostering collaboration between students and faculty in the conceptualization and execution of events tailored to the University of the Pacific student body. This initiative aims to pioneer a fresh event format in conjunction with faculty to develop innovative initiatives that diverge from the conventional speaker panel style event. Such events serve as a platform for students to self-reflect both on their professional and personal growth journeys while also being an active participant in their own learning. An analysis of a post-event survey found that an overwhelming 90% of students in attendance were able to reflect on their own personal growth. Future events should accommodate a larger population of students and a comprehensive post-event survey highlighting various ways in which students engage in self-reflection throughout the duration of the event.
