Abstract/Artist Statement

After-school programs have a vital role in encouraging and assisting students, as well as ensuring parents and their child(ren) are safe in school. Lodi Unified School Districts’ Westwood Elementary School Bridge after-school program consists of 90 first to sixth-graders. Bridge is broken into two components: academic and enrichment hours. As College Corps fellows, both components are assisted. After a long day of school, students continue to be on campus, therefore enrichment activities are crucial for keeping them active and stimulating their brains To improve the extracurricular activities, staff and students are surveyed with questions in regard to Bridge improvements and potential events they want to be held. One goal of our project is to lessen the financial load for staff who use their own money to buy supplies. Our group wants to find resources or grants. Public schools are mainly funded by property taxes which reflects on the educational funds provided. Bridge is a part of public education, and a grant from the government for underserved communities could be a possibility. In our poster, our group will discuss our future plans for Bridge.
