Abstract
Use It Up is a mobile application designed to reduce food waste and make meal planning simplified with its three main functions: a mobile pantry tracker, a feed of personalized recipe videos, and food delivery services under one platform. It targets consumers who want to be more sustainable while saving time and money.
By acting as a digital pantry, Use It Up lets users scan, upload, and track what they own, allowing users to see both quantity and expiration dates of items from anywhere. Overall, we aspire to reduce food waste and encourage a more sustainable lifestyle by leading users to making the most of what they already have. Cutting food waste also saves money, because users maximize ingredients they purchase rather than purchasing duplicates or items they do not need. The in-app recipe recommendations further save time by removing the stress of deciding what to cook. Using the virtual inventory, the app suggests recipes based on what’s already available, so cooking is more efficient. Partnerships with local stores (Trader Joes, Sprouts) and delivery services increase convenience and users can receive missing ingredients delivered directly to their door.
Use It Up follows a freemium model. The free version includes access to the tracker, basic recipe recommendations, a simple grocery list, and delivery options. The premium version offers advanced recipe suggestions, personalized grocery lists, and automated delivery services powered by an AI algorithm, at $4.99 per month. Additional revenue comes from in-app advertising and commission fees from delivery services.
