ARNOLD ARBORETUM, HARVARD UNIVERSITY.

Jamaica Plain, Mass., December 28, 1896.

My dear Muir:

The enclosed may interest you or at least part of it which relates to the Hemlock with erect cones. I have seen one of Gorman's specimens and I took the position of the cones to be the result of imperfect development; at any rate I suppose we shall have to go next summer and look this matter up. I wish you would return Gorman's letter for future reference.
My foot is slowly improving and I can now bear a little weight on it, but it is very tedious and I shan't be good for much before spring.

Faithfully yours,

[illegible]

John Muir, Esq.
