My dear Highland Mary
Here you all are in grand style. The big pictures came yeserday but no letter... I look back to last summer as the most beautiful of all my life. It was a great blessing to have you in Portage when our loving mother went to her reward in heaven.
I had a letter from Sarah a few days ago. they are all in usual health as we also are here, Maggie is of course feeling lonesome on the eve of her boy Johnnies departure for Nebraska to attend school. Your old friend Miss Thayer is here for a year she is living with the Westlakes. I'm pegging away with writing. Here is a picture made in Chicago Happy New Year Mary & to all your fine family
