The frost has been keen here since Sunday but we have only a very thin sprinkling of snow, and from the papers, I see, that fall has been so heavy in the north that some of the highland railways are blocked.

Many thanks to you for the book, you so kindly sent, and which I got from Mr. Lunam. I have been too long in acknowledging it, but for a few weeks before Xmas was very busy in school, and hope you will therefore

excuse me. I have not read it all yet, but was much amused in reading about the Douglas Squirrel to learn that birds and beasts have a dislike to the Old 100th.
I rather like the tune but it is often heavy in church, as the congregation, at least the older members, sing it so slowly.
As soon as I finish

the book, I must send it to my brother, he is always in the neighbourhood of Newcastle, three of his girls were with me till the week before Xmas, when they went home to spend their holiday. I expect two of them to return, the eldest one will, I think remain at home now.
