Mr John Muir

Dear Sir:
Though it is true, to my regret, that I had not the good fortune to make your acquaintance during ten years off & on of residence at Santa Barbara, I am taking the liberty of sending you an inaugural Ode which I have written, in the hope

that you may find in it some expression of the greatly simple things of our life, such as I have found in your descriptions of the life of the great Sierras, which I know too I am happy to say, and love.
Yours sincerely
