[2 May 1912]Martinez, WednesdayDear Mrs Hooker:I have received the N. Y. letters you forwarded. and as to your Tahoe junipers I'm sure I saw them in all their raggedy jaggedy many-angled many-elbowed glory, perhaps in the new gilded edition of the Mountains of California, published just as I was leaving N. Y. for the Amazon and which Ive not seen since. You say you're working yourself out of breath reforesting the garden etc. hope you wont mar your fine lawn with [pet?] William James' pepper blackguards. Waste not a breath on any such silvan vanity. Fortunately you now have Marian to moderate your overindustry. Tell her I rejoice in her good health and good everything. nothing finer may be seen in these frivolous flaming commercial days than a brave soul holding a straightahead way to a noble aim in spite of health wealth or the want of it.

I'm at work in my lonely den clearing away a big eight months talus of letters to get at something worthwhile.Remember me to Fred & Alice.Ever faithfully affectionately yoursJohn Muir
