ARNOLD ARBORETUM, HARVARD UNIVERSITY,Jamaica Palin,Mass.,_____December 14, 1909.Dear Muir:I am glad to see your signature on your open letter concerning the Hetch-hetchy Valley; it is all right. It seems hard to believe that such a thing can be done. Who is at the bottom of this? Is this one of Pinchot's schemes to curry favor with the public?I should like to know how you are getting on and if your daughter is better. Are you working on your book and when will it be finished? we are rather deep here in these days in Chinese trees of which there appear to be hundreds of new ones. Think of one region with thirty or forty different Spruce trees, more than all the rest of the world put together. What a pity it is that we are not twenty years younger that we might go and see some of these wonders! With the compliments of the season and best wishes for the New Year,Always faithfully yours,[illegible]John Muir, Esq.,Martinez, Cal.04649
