[4]The Zuni River country is a part of the Painted Desert and is full of scattered wood & some logs. The Chaco, Chusea & Animas valleys in N.W. New Mex. are covered with scattered fossil wood and near the Escavada Wash there were lots of logs 2 and 3 feet in diameter I have marked these places on the maps, which you can keep & if you want more detailed notes will send them to be used as you like.Mrs. Bailey joins me in all good wishes and sincere regards,Very truly yours Vernon Bailey.[1] Jan. 10, 1909.[letterhead]Dear Mr. Muir:We were glad to get your good Christmas letter and glad to hear that Helen is improving tho still in the desert. There are worse places than the desert to us who know and love it, but we shall be glad when you can have her back with you, both for her sake and yours.04400 [2]This morning I was down at Dr. Merriams and we opened the box of good things you had sent and have been feasting on them today. They are indeed a rare treat. We never get nuts with such fresh, delicious flavor here nor such raisins, but the best of all is the kindly Christmas thought of the sender that warms our hearts. One and all we thank you.[3]No, I didn't get either specimens or photographs of the fossil logs nor will I ever have occasion to publish anything on them. Will mark the places on maps and send you what notes I have in case they are of interest to you in connection with your studies of these old forests. I was hurrying over the country with a pack outfit and what I saw was of course but a small fraction of what I didn't see.
