[illegible]San Francisco, Jan. 2nd, 1909.Mr. C. H. Sholes,417 Chamber of Commerce, Portland, Oregon.Dear Sir:-Yours of December 29th at hand. I note that you turned over our correspondence to the Officers of the Mazamas, Mr. Gorman being President. I trust that they acted promptly, and in that way swelled the volume of correspondence that is going from all over the country in this matter to the Public Lands Committee and other members of Congress.I note in this morning's CHRONICLE that the Chairman of the Sub-committee is showing a tendency to come our way in the matter, at least by indirection. This Sub-committee reports to the entire Public Lands Committee on the 6th, so that if you have not already written, a letter would not reach them in time to affect their report, so that I will ask you to send a good sharp telegram on Monday if you have not written, and kindly charge up the expense to us.I am again enclosing you our general letter that we sent out to our entire membership, signed by Mr. Muir, Professor Le Conte, Professor Bade, and myself, also the personal letter that I sent out to my friends. If you see Mr. Gorman, kindly ask him to advise me as to just what the Mazamas have done. I trust they have co-operated promptly and energetically in this matter, as now is the time to scotch this matter. I have red-lined in my enclosures the points that should be of particular immediate interest. Yours in the fight,[illegible]06254
