Dear Mrs Arnold;
I sincerely sympathize with you in your loss of a brother & in you lonely vigils with your mother in the shadow of death - a sad sorrow-laden time however natural & however lighted by hope of blessed immortality in a world free from pain
To live to so grand & noble an age your mother must have lived a happy life, rich in good deeds. Give her Goodcheer & good hope from me & believe me in warmest sympathy,
faithfully yours
John Muir
