28Martinez, Mar. 12, 1908Darling Helen. Apply at once to Mrs. Funk for board. I've been anxious, as my letters to you show, ever since I know that you were helping in cooking & since Miss B. left I've been uneasy over the extra work falling on Mary. Just say to Mr. Van Dyke that I'm worried about the extra work on Mary, while at the same time Dr. Moffitt possitively forbids you having any thing to do with cooking, so that you would either have to board at Mrs. Funk, or get a cook of your own. The Van D.s have been & are so uncommonly kind I am sure you will avoid the slightest cause of misunderstanding.Get wire screens over doors & windows & if you Like around your porch, leave all open at right times, & the wind will do the sweeping & dusting, or give Mrs. F. extra pay for making your bed etc. All goes well here. I'm gatherings strength fast, have good appetite & will soon be with you.Ever your lovingFatherGive my kindest regards to Mr. Van Dyke & Dick & Mary, & ask them what I can do for them before leaving home. Hope to be in Daggett in 10 or 12 days. Now, no more cooking. You must get well. It is now or never.
