written after hard sickness. still very gratful
Martinez, March. 11, 1908
Dear Mr Lukens:
I have been very sick but am up & slowly convalescing, hoping soon to get into the Sierra for a breath of reviving air I had a severe attack of the Grippe, (the 3d this winter) & it came near making an end of me. The last four years have been full of anxiety & sorrow & sickness making me barren & useless But I must not complain for most of my life has been joyous & free above most. Thanking you for your kind sympathy I am
ever faithfully your friend John Muir
