Dear Friend,
Your beautiful scene came tonight and I am alone as usual in the storm and darkness. Your little card of greeting brings a word of friendly cheer.
I am sorry to hear of "illness and trouble" though my own life is burdened with it, until sometimes I cry aloud, "My God why has thou forsaken me"!

My mother will be one hundred years old the 5th of May. In August she fell and broke her right thigh. I have been in constant attendance night and day. No one has been with me except a woman, part of one night.
I can get through the days but these black nights sometimes try my nerves.
I, also, have a brother in Berkeley dying. A letter tonight tells me he is very low.
Trouble comes in various guises My heart goes out to you in sympathy. May God give us strength.
Sincerely your friend Mary J. Arnold
