[in margin: Gen 3174]
Dear Mr Lummiss:
I find that writing postal orders, checks, letters etc for worthy causes far & near takes up nearly all my time leaving only broken scraps for my own work. Therefore I am trying to cut loose from half or more of the societies I belong to. Here is a check for $20. After this last money is spent on dues cut off my subscriptions to Indian & Archeological Societies & believe me nevertheless
faithfully yours
John Muir
