Martinez, Jan. 8, 1908Dear Dr. Merriam,The doctors have banished Helen to the dry deserts for at least 2 years. I took her to the Mohave desert near Daggett where I built a cottage for her and companion on the Van Dyke alfalfa ranch. She is delighted with the climate and grand desert scenery and seems as jolly as ever. I have just arrived here and will return in a week or so with some needed house supplies. I wish you would write her a note now and then as you are one of her favorites. As for my Washington visit it must be indefinitely postponed. If you can find out just how the Hetch Hetchy matter now is with the Secretary I wish you would let me know.Wishing you all a happy New Year I amFaithfully your friendJOHN MUIR04017
