My dear Cousin:

I have already tried to find out what mistake or oversight has caused the irregularity concerning Picturesque California, and will try again. I’m glad to hear that you are all well, and heartily wish you a happy New Year. All the Muirs, both first and second crop, are well this side the broad sea as far as I have heard and I had letters from my mother and sister in Wisconsin a short time ago.

I wish those boys of yours would come out to this grand wilderness and help me to explore it. I have always had to go alone, strange to say, and boys that go camping in the bogs and fogs of Ireland must I think be of the right stuff for this Sierra and Alaska work. Remember me kindly to them and to your wife and brother and all the tribe, and give them my heartiest wishes for the New Year.

Ever cordially yours,

John Muir.
