Martinez, Mar. 12, 1900.
My dear Miss Graydon:
We were all so glad to hear from you after so long a silence under exciting news from Honlulu. That miserable plague is, I hope, gone forever, and now you must cheer up and go to work as if it had been only a bad dream. No doubt you will enjoy your college work. How fortunate you are in having such good and wise friends as the Alexanders. But how terribly the poor of the town must have suffered!
We are all about as usual, excepting Maggie, my sister, who is down with the Grippe, but is beginning to get better. Wanda is flourishing at school - likes everything and everybody about Berkeley and is studying hard and getting ahead. I am very glad to hear that all the Indianapolis friends are well. I have not had a word direct for a long time, except a short letter with clippings from the newspapers from Miss Hendricks about the death and life of the lovely grandmother. I devoutly loved and admired her.
I don't know when my book is to be out. I'm still pegging at it. Helen amuses herself writing rhyming letters to Wanda now that she is lonesome. My Sister Sarah is getting stronger. David and family are well. John Reid is recovering from light attack of Grippe, and the Colemans are well. The baby cutting teeth, growing, crowing, and doing other wonderful things. Mr. Coleman's brother Hal is married and is living in our adobe. All send love.
Cheer up, my lass, soon all your sky will be bright. I'll try to get Wanda and Helen to write.
