Mr. John Muir,
Martinez, Cal.
Dear Sir:-
I am in receipt of your letter of January 28th and greatly regret to learn that you feel unable to accept my offer for the publication of Sticken. In fact I regret this so humbly that I am venturing in [illegible] the proposal to you, with the [illegible] that your arrangement with us be for the separate book publication only, and that you be at liberty to include the story in a collected volume of sketches. We plan the publication in a special form and I really do not think that there will be any conflict between your proposed volume of sketches and our edition. I trust that you will feel that this presents the matter more favorably to you own plans and that I may hear from you at your early convenience, in fact I will be glad to have you wire at our expense.
I am interested in you suggestion of a volume of [illegible] sketches. I will be grateful if I may have the prifilege of considering its publication. The location of our publishing office in New York is will undoubtedly give us better facilities for marketing our works and we will be very glad to have the work of our principle California writers on our list.
