Mr. Wm. Newton,
Omaha, Neb.

My dear Sir;

I am the John Muir you saw at Prairie du Chien when you were a small boy in the Auld lang syne. I remember your father and mother with pleasure, and have their photographs at home in California. The only person from the company of those old days I have oftentimes seen is Mrs. Wilson (Emily Pelton).
I am studying the petrified forests hereabouts, but hope to be at home in a few days, and will be glad to see you when you come West, and am with pleasant memories, Faithfully yours,

John Muir.
