[First draft of letter, in note-book]

Martinez, Feb. 18, '05.

Mr. Elon R. Brown,

When your letter of July 18th, 1903, was written I was studying the forests of Australia. I know very little of technical forestry. A list of books suitable for your library on practical and technical forestry you could probably get from Gifford Pinchot, or Professor Fernow.

[Following letter evidently replaces the above]

When your letter of July 18, '03, was written, I was studying the forests of Australia. A list of books suitable for your library, on praotioal and technical forestry you oould get from Gifford Pinchot or Prof. Fernow better than from me, as my studies have mostly been on wild forests.
Of course you should have the works of Linnaeus, and Marshal's Arbustum Americana, Michaux's Silva of N.A., Sargent's Silva, all Thomas Niuttal's writings and those of Bertram Pursh, Kahn. Bentham and Hooker. Drumand and some other worthies. But anything like a complete list it is impossible for me to give in a letter.
I should advise you to visit the Arnold Arboretum library, one of the best I know of in America. No doubt Prof. Sar[gent] would gladly assist you in making out a list suitable to your wants.
With best wishes for your yood work, i am.

Faithfully yours,

[John Muir]
