Dec. 15th, 1895.
Dear friend Muir
I hope you will excuse me for the long delay in replying to your kind letter of the 30th of April.
It was placed carefully aside in my desk at the office to await a favorable opportunity to reply to same, but unfortunately every time it appeared to me until now my time & attention were demanded on pressing business matters. I hope that you are not thus so much taken up with worldly affairs. However I might feel contented now without business worries, but should

very much like to try it for a time.
Am arranging to go over to Phila at the end of Jany to see Mr. Tilghman, but do not expect to stay for more than a week, or two weeks at most. If you should happen to be east at the time I shall be delighted to arrange to meet you, but it will be impossible for me to go out to California this time. Will let you know later on, when I shall sail from Liverpool.
Am glad that you were interested in the article in the Society of Arts on Sand Blast, shall keep you fully posted up in future improvements in the process. I do not know whether the Sand Blast is in use in Sanfrancisco or not. Ward & Nash, Chicago, are the agents for our apparatus in the States.
Have often read the name of Senator Spooner of Wisconsin, but did not dream that he was my old schoolmate [illegible] at the
university. I remember James High too. He was high in build as well as in
name if I remember rightly. [illegible]as was the son of a lawyer at Madison I think. Was it he or his father who was the Post Master General some years since?
I have not had time to write to Prof Butler, but will do so at the first opportunity. Remember me to him if you should write him.
My family are all well & join me in heartily wishing you & yours a Merry Christmas & a happy New Year.
Yours sincerely,
J.E. Mathewsons
