My dear Helen, I am all ready to up the mountains I dont know how fast or far I can climb now but everything is so beautiful & fresh & inspiring here that I begin to feel young again. I think I like pine trees & springs & streams of chrystal water better than ever & I get excited about them more than I let people know I wish you & Wanda could be up here to see the waterfalls & trees. I saw Cosy Hutchings at Wanona & she & many other people asked about you & [Mamma?], & one old man asked for Grandma. But I must make haste for the mule will soon be here & the pack ready to take me the first open easy part of my journey. I'm going to the mountains at the head of the Tuolemne. then send the mule back by two young men who are going with me that far. Then Im going down the river through the canon alone & then back here. It will be hard but Im going slow & I hope my poor legs will learn to walk on rocks again. I wish I could pack my bread out of the

water as I went along or nibble it out of the tree tops like Mr Douglas (Squirrel I mean of course) I seem to be going home & all the Martinez years seem only a dream. But I must be going & the farther I go up the mountains the nearer I shall be to you my dear.
I hope you are all getting on well & dont miss me much about the farm. Give my love to Mamma & Grandma & Wanda. Goodbye.
