ARNOLD ARBORETUM, HARVARD UNIVERSITY,

Jamaica Plain,Mass.,January 26,1899

My dear Muir:

I return your letter and newspaper cut.It sounds monstrous these superintendents(did you ever hear the name of one of them?) holding a solemn conclave to allow the destruction of.the Washington forests at the rate of $5.00 per thousand sheep. What are we going to do about it?Clearly it is time to begin another crusade, but who has the time and strength to do it and what good is coming out of it all? I confess I feel discouraged.I am ready, however,to do what I can if you will suggest some way by which the administration can be made to realize the short-sightedr folly of its methods.Of course Pinchot and his gang are largely responsible for this condition of things.I hope they realize it.

Faithfully yours,C.S.[illegible]
