Confidential

My dear Muir:-

I send you herewith, in confidence, and to be returned to me for my file, a copy of a letter which Irish has addressed to the "Garden and Forest", but which I doubt if they will publish, as I have exposed several of his false and misleading statements.
That man's logic wi11 be the death of him. When he dies, it will probably be by falling on his own pen. Meanwhile, it might be as well for you to tell me what is the basis of his silly talk about you in the Yosemite.
Would it be out of the question for you to send us, by the 1st of December, your article on the King's River Can on? I, mean could we depend upon you to let us have copy then without fail? I see that the President and others are to go to California next March or April to open the Stanford University, and we should like very much to have the article about that time.
The pictures will need to be engraved, and so far we can get nothing out of Robinson, who, however, makes a very poor mouth. Will you not go to see him sometime at 506 Battery Street, when

you are in 'Frisco, and see if the thing cannot be pushed along? It is not necessary that we should have very many pictures,- five or six will perhaps be enough to give a comprehensive view of the Canon.
Meanwhile, will you not send me a description of the town-ship lines (see the Land Office map) of the best limits for a park in the region. The sooner this is done, the easier it will be to get the Secretary of the Interior to suspend entries in that region.
The Secretary of the Interior tells me that Warner has written him that the Yosemite is all right. I have already given the Secretary the addresses of Mackenzie, Robinson, Armes and yourself.

Very Sincerely Yours,

R.N. Johnson.

I have had a talk with [illegible]. we shall not take the [illegible] by side issues. [illegible] seems of unique interest. Don't let your ink [illegible]
