Mr. John Muir,
My Dear Sir,
In the "Century" for August you speak of hogs and cattle and the plow and ax rapidly destroying the Yosemite Valley.
I am anxious to secure evidence and information concerning the Valley, and know of no better source than yourself. Will you kindly let me know when you saw hogs roaming at large in the Valley, and whether the ax has been used there to clear fields for the plow, and by whom and on what part of the floor?
You will also do me an esteemed favor if you will give me a statement of the condition of the Valley when you first saw it, as contrasted with its condition now in regard to its tree growth. Are there more or less trees and brush in the Valley now than then?
I am seeking facts upon which to make up my mind whether California must confess delinquencies in the management of the grant which should shame her into abdication of her trust.
