Yosemite Valley, Cal. June 3 1889
Dear Louie - We arrived here about one oclock after a fine glorious ride thru the forests, not much dust, not very hot - the entire trip very delightful & restful & exhilerating. Johnston was charming all the way. I looked out as we passed Martinez about 11 oclock & it seemed strange I should ever go past that renowned town I though of you all as sleeping & safe Whatever more of travel I am to do must be done soon as it grows ever harder to leave my MRs & young. The foothills & all the woods & the valley are flowery far beyond what I could have looked for. & the sugar pines seemed nobler than ever. Indeed all seems so new I fancy I could take up the study of these mountain glories with fresh en-thusiasm as if I were getting into a sort of second youth or dotage or something of that sort. The Governor Waterman was in our party, big burly & somewhat

childishly jolly. Also some other jolly fellows & fellowesses. Saw Hill & his fine studio, he has one large Yosemite very find but I did not like it so well as the one you saw. He has another Yosemite about the size of the Glacier [illegible] I fancy you would all ike. It is sold for 500. but he would paint another if you wished. Everybody is good to us - Frank Pixley is here and [Bene?] Truman that wrote about Tropical Cal. I find old Galen Clark also. He looks well - & is earning a living by carrying passengers about the valley. [illegible] & Blacks old hotels are torn down - so that only Bernards and the new Stoneman House are left - This last is quite grand, still it has a silly look amid surroundsings so massive & sublime. McAuley & the immortal twins still flounder & flourish in the etherial sky of Glacier [illegible] - I mean to hire Indians horses or something to make a trip to the Lake Tenaya region or Big Meadows & Tuolumne Canon. But how much we will be able to accomplish will depend upon ^the snow & the legs & resolution of the Century Give my love to everybody at the [illegible] houses & kiss & keep the precious babies for me as for [now?] will probably be home in about a week Ever [illegible] J.M.
