I am sending with this [an article] sketch of the glaciers of the coast which I wrote for the first the book of the Harriman Expedition & [and] of which the publisher set me a few sets [ ] Unfortunately, all the [in the] [sent/best] illustrations of the Muir Gl [Glacier] are in other parts of the [book] in big 2 vol [volume] book.
But I may get them for you [just/get]
How big & [and] wild our country still is, & [and] how strange this icy part must seem to a S. [south] Carolinian.

My dear cousin,
When your summer letter [came] [here] I was away in the mtn [mountains] for inspiration & [and] rest after a long [season/siege] of pen work. I am always glad to hear how you & [and] Maggie [&] [all] [the] friends are getting on in the old [Dunbar] house & [and] to hear about the [Hays] also, I shall always remember as a great [place/pleasure] the [visit to] Dunbar & [and] [Liverpool] visits. I was fortunate enough to be able to make [I only] while I oftentimes think how fine it would be were we only near enough for at least yearly meetings. I’m glad you [are] have been so well through the summer & [and] hope you will escape [having] [had]
