My Dear Dr Mell [Mellichamp]
Many thanks for the fine sets of [specimens] of P. [Cubensis] & [and] Q. [myrtifolia] all of wh [which] being so carefully & [and] skillfully packed came to hand in excellent order.
I had not noticed before that this or indeed any of our oaks matured at once [ ] [burnished] [fruit] but I see that Prof S [Sargent] in a note which gives you credit for this discovery in his sylva [silva]
I’m glad you liked my tribute to [ ] & [and] got some pleasure from it. All the others seemed to have forgotten his bro [brother] John Who had the same peculiar charm of southern manners was quite as much loved & [and] admired by those got near him tho [though] he was never so widely known & [and] popular as a teacher.
the miserable influenza [etc.] so common nowadays [all] [over] the world in [winter] We dread it even in Golden California. We are all about [as] [usual] except [Maggie] who has not been so well for a month or two but is slowly [recovering] again. Sarah was greatly pleased to [get] your [letter] & [and] [you] [would] [be] interested in the family history Wanda comes home every Saturday morning & [and] goes back to school Monday. “Muir Station” is at the side of one of our vineyard only a short walk from the house [and] Helen seems in no hurry [to go] away to school but she is developing finely & [and] will learn fast enough by & [and] by. I’ll send their pictures as soon as they get them wh [which] I hope [will] [be] [soon] Remember me to Maggie & [and] Susan Gilroy, Jane Mather, & [and] the Hays I’m sending you a magazine Heaven bless you all your cousin JM
