Last [summer] as you know I was in Alaska. This yr [year] I was [have spent] in the Sierra going up by [& in working] – a month excursion in the Sierra Lake Tahoe, & down by Yo [Yosemite] [Carson] [King] along the head water of the Truckee Carson Mokelumne Calaveras Stanislaus [ ] Tuol [Tuolumne] & Merced rivers, Crossing the Sierra 4 times [going by way of Lake Tahoe returning by Yo [Yosemite]] examining forests & learning what I could in a general way of birds & mammals with Dr [Merriam] & his sister & Mr. [Bayley] a triumvirate of naturalists with [infinite] appetite for [ ] Sqr [squirrels] & chipmunks etc we had a delightful
