Lakes

“The eastern valleys of Scandinavia, & the mountains & plains of Sweden present a perfect labyrinth of lakes”

The granite plains of Finland are sprinkled still thicker” Reclus’ “Earth”. [The Earth: a Descriptive History of the Phenomena of the Life of the Globe]

Alt [altitude] 3d [third] Yo [Yosemite] 7430

Alt [altitude] 1st meadow foot of Lyell 9350.

Canon Lyell of Main Merced

Considering the canon that runs to Mt [Mount] Lyell as the trunk or axis, then the first branch ascending SE.ward [southeastward] bifurcates about a mile above its union with the axis.

Both branches rise rapidly for 800 ft [feet] making fine slopes of swelling granite for cascades to dance & sing upon then they push back to their parent mountains with but little change of course.

Forest

The eastern branch contains a fine evenly planted forest of pine & Mtn [Mountain] Hemlock [Williamson Spruce] growing on a smoothly spread field of moraine material mostly terminal to the sheltered receding glaciers of the summits in front of which it lies.

The other branch is extremely slotted

Lakes

by the erosion of N.E. [northeast] cleavage joints, many of which are occupied by streams & are several hundred yards long & ten to twelve wide

Many lakes as well as ridges receive their main outlines from these developed planes.

The dividing ridge of the two forks is precipitous & grooved longitudinally by the scooping out of seams as noted above

[sketch of cross-section of dividing ridge with grooves: C. Section]

Sculpture

The canon of these two forks is cut lower at the mouth than the Lyell val [valley] axis.

Soda Springs

On the right bank of the W. [West] Fork there is a group of fine cool pungent Soda Springs.

Lakes

The lakes of these two forks number 12

" " " Lyell fork 13

" " Basin that empties above the Merced Lake 16

with innumerable smaller ones many of which are slung lengthwise in hammock-like basins high on the dividing ridges whose basins were developed by glaciers running par. [parallel] to clvg [cleavage] planes
