This peak Mt Whitney was this day climbed by Clarence King US geologist & Frank F Knowles of Tule River
on Sept 1st in N Y [North Yosemite] I first learned the the high pk [peak] South of here wh [which] I climbed in 1871 was not Mt Whitney & I [immediately] came here.
Clouds & storms presented me from recognizing this in 1871 or I should have come here then.

east side. Camp in sage at small spring first night
Oct 20 [28] push up canon [canyon] wh [which] leads past N [North] shoulder of mtn [mountain]. Camp at timber line.
Oct 21st [29]. Climb to summit by 8 o’clock- sketch etc gain glorious views & descend to foot of range
Oct 22 [30] Back to camp at Independence.
