Sunrise first orange on sky. Mts [mountains] beyond vall [valley] different shades of blue then crimson tho [though] near granite chocolate from thick air of desert soon clear.
View from top v [very] grand E [East] ward 5 [warm] mts [mountains] & S [south]
Reached the base of highest pk [peak] near sunset at edge of small lake. No wood [ ] 4 or 5 ms [miles] therefore tho [though] tired made up my mind to spend the night climbing as could not sleep
Took bearings by stars. Was

sorry to find that I was among summit needles by midnight or 11 oclock. Had to dance all night to keep from freezing. Was [ ] & storming next morning Oct [26] 16 & had to turn back without gaining the top
Was exhausted [ere] I reached horse & camp food. Oct [27] 17 set out for Independence reach it at night eat & sleep all next day then set out afoot for summit by direct course up
