All the scenery, every feature of it, as glacial as Alaska, or that of Yosemite, or of Switzerland. Rainy all day. Went to Hotel Avanido with Mr. Mendel. Had luggage wheeled up from the sea wall. Had to come a mile or more in boat through the waves, as in most South American ports. Had long walks about the city. Called on the American Consul, Mr. Lay. Could learn but little about steamers for Santos. October 8. Rainy in the forenoon. Walked down to the landing at the sea wall to seek news of Mr. Harell, who was detained on board by rain. Sky cleared about 1:30 P.M. Went up the Corcovado Mountain by trolley and cog railed. Extremely interesting trip, in wide, all-around views of glacial landscapes,
