evening without the ordinary sooty multiform clouds since leaving Norfolk. Sunset delicately beautiful with pale yellow arching films, colored thus- Water all day violet blue. October 6. Cloudless until near sunset. Then foggy. Solid black near the horizon. Sun when within twenty minutes of setting passed an opening in the solid dark cloud. The opening veiled with gauzy films through which the sun shone bright red. Fairly painting a clearly defined road over the waves of bright scarlet from the ship to the horizon. Three albatrosses followed the ship in the forenoon. The air nearly chilly in the morning. Memorable day. October 7. Arrived at Rio about 7:30 A.M. Approached the harbor entrance about 6:00.
