August 12, 1911. Left Brooklyn, N.Y. 11:00 A.M. Stopped several hours opposite the Statue of Liberty. Thence sailed for Norfolk, Va., for coal. August 13, 1911. Arrived 4:00 P.M. in charge of pilot in broad shallow muddy Chesapeake Bay. Went alongside grand steel coal bunkers – very high. Coal shot down into ship bunkers – 1000 tons per hour or so, but required over twenty-four hours to trim by twenty negroes. August 15, 1911. Sailed for Barbados 11:00 P.M. Shores of bay low. Several forts. Traces of Civil War. Large number
