S [south] of St K [Starr King] riv [river] runs close to high rock bank leaving flat smooth gravel slope up to St K [Starr King] This is open [sparsely] pined but in places closely & evenly chaparraled by Arct [Arctic] glauca making delightful [green] meadow like this [tawny] tract is built of drift Many places over 100 ft deep Many smooth water [pebbles] even large boulders smoothed smooth atop coarser below as seen in sections of streams. This drift v [very] [different] in physical conditions & positions from that of higher regular [moraine] Seems to change from
