beds making carpets the smallest with two 3-parted lvs & a large single flr between an inch wide. Very red in the bud & when newly opened growing pale with age as the red berry begins to form. Handsome yellow mellow flrd potentilla in big rugs. Delightful beds of willow in smooth carpets. Purple flrd saxafrages Romanzoffia [like] [ceanothus]. On Egg [Negg] Island joined to mainland at extreme low water. The floweriest of all. Could easily detect the fragrance ½ mile off. Lupines in hearty luxuriant abundance a sturdy conifr. Romanzoffia Large red [castelleja] the purp rubus 2 Saxafrages Strawberry. Blue violets large & fine. Allosorus, willow carpets & shaggy almost impenetrable thickets covering large areas on top. Rushes grasses [pedicularis] dwrf vaccinium. Very handsome dwarf conifr dotted over with yel flrs in cushiony tufts like stemless silene - found at Nunatak Inlet on mor[aine] 21st All today spent in Hidden Gl & Nunatak Gl Inlets. Sketched Hidden in the A.M. Was told had only two hrs ashore while the ship lay [at anchor] waiting but the surveyors Gilbert & Gannett took 5 hrs - much to Captains disgust who wanted to take on water further down. In the P.M. steamed in launch 12 ms up Nunatak Gl Inlet Got back at 8. [Mrs] Harriman & Averell [William Averell] went with us & Dall & artist Dalenbaugh[Dellenbaugh] - A fine gl. 1 m or more of face discharging slowly. The left side dirt covered & bare.
